Enrolment Policies and Procedures

For more information about the Department of Education’s Placement Policy, please follow the links below:

Placement Policy

University High School is currently experiencing a high demand for enrolment and as a result, the Department has placed the school on an Enrolment Management Plan. This means places for 2024 can only be allocated to students inside our designated neighbourhood area (school zone), and students with a sibling at the same permanent address who are attending the school concurrently. Please see the priority order of placement, as per the Department’s placement policy:

Eligible children and young persons have the right to be admitted to their designated neighbourhood government school, regardless of capacity.

In circumstances where schools do not have sufficient accommodation to accept all students who apply from outside their school zone, schools must manage enrolment applications in accordance with the following priority order of placement:

  1. students with a sibling at the same permanent address who are attending the school at the same time
  2. all other students in order of closeness of their home to the school.

In exceptional circumstances, a student may be enrolled in a school based on compassionate grounds. This is an overarching consideration and does not form part of the priority order of placement. Further information is available below under ‘Exceptional circumstances – compassionate grounds’.

Students on Visas

The Placement Policy above also applies to students who hold a visa.
Depending on the visa type, students may be required to apply for enrolment to University High School through the International Education Division (International Student Program), or may be able to apply for enrolment directly to our school. Further information about visa types and the enrolment process can be found here: International Student Program.
Families can check the ‘International Student Visa Fee Table’ to determine which enrolment process applies for their visa.

Enrolment Timelines

Specific timelines apply for Year 6 to 7 transition: please see this page for details.
Students wishing to enrol in Years 8-12 for the following academic year should note the Year 8-12 timeline.

Students outside of these categories (mid-year enrolments) may also apply for enrolment at any time, using the Enrolment Application form. Please refer to the relevant page for further details.

Enrolment process – verifying residential address

In accordance with the Department’s protocols we may make enquiries to verify permanent address information provided in support of an enrolment application. This could include:

  • Checking the Australian or Victorian Electoral roll
  • Contacting your real estate agent to confirm lease or contract of sale
  • Checking whether there are any regulations/codes limiting the occupancy of a residence

If, after a placement offer is made, the student’s permanent residence changes or it comes to light that the address provided on the application form was not the genuine permanent residence of the student, a school may withdraw a placement offer in the following circumstances:

  • where, after the priority order of placement is applied to the correct address, a place is not available for the student
  • the new address is not within the school zone
  • the placement offer and any subsequent material provided to the student and their parent/carer expressly states that the offer may be withdrawn prior to the first day of attendance if the student’s permanent place of residence changes or the school becomes aware that the address provided on the application form was not the genuine permanent residence for the student.

Further information may be found on Department’s website, here.
