Challenge and Extension (Acceleration Program)

This is a special program for gifted and talented students. The Acceleration Program has been an integral part of the school’s program since 1981. Students in the acceleration program are placed in the same home group and engage in a Year 7 to 9 curriculum program that challenges and extends them in a range of subject areas. University High School has a vibrant and extensive performing arts, sport, student leadership and activities program with many opportunities for students to explore and further develop their skills and interests. A full description of the school curriculum and information about the extra-curricular program can be found in relevant sections on the school website.

Students enter the Acceleration Program in Year 7, and after completing Years 8 and 9,  select from a range Senior Pathways programs for Years 10 to 12.  Students can apply to accelerate into a VCE subject at year 10, with the expectation that they complete a full VCE program in Year 11 (6 subjects) and Year 12 (5 subjects). The University High School offers over 40 different VCE subjects. They can also apply to participate in the University of Melbourne’s Extension Program in which they take first year degree subjects while still studying for their VCE.

Any additional inquiries about the Acceleration Program should be directed to the Assistant Principal, Sue Prosenica (9347 2022).

Application procedure for the Year 7 Acceleration Program in 2025

The Acceleration Program falls under the school’s Enrolment Management Plan. This means all students offered a confirmed place in Year 7 at University High School will be offered the opportunity to apply to be part of the Year 7 Acceleration Program.  Admission to this program is at Year 7 level only and the selection process is based on aptitude tests (completed through Edutest), expression of interest response and interviews.
The aptitude tests are conducted by Edutest and will occur on Saturday 7 September, 2024.  There is a registration fee payable to Edutest, which is non-refundable.

For planning purposes, the Edutest registration link will be emailed as part of your child’s 2025 Year 7 confirmation of placement at University High School.  Edutest registrations strictly close on Monday 2 September, 2024. Please note: There is a short window to complete the Edutest registration.

Applicants who register for the Edutest will be sent an Expression of Interest Google Form link to share additional information that will be considered in the shortlisting process. Interviews are conducted with short-listed applicants at the start of term 4.

Students and their parents/carers will be informed about the outcome of their 2025 Year 7 Acceleration Program application later in term 4.
