The EBS student’s Program Overview

The Elizabeth Blackburn Sciences (EBS) cater for students passionate in Science to develop, refine and extend their scientific knowledge and skills in a teaching and learning environment focused on engagement, wellbeing and empowerment.

Our programs have been designed to provide students with a challenging and diverse curriculum that gives them the opportunity to explore and extend their knowledge in different fields of Science and Mathematics and to cater for different career pathways. All programs develop essential skills in research, writing and critical thinking, helping students to develop new interests and passions while honing the skills and knowledge they already possess.

Designed as a two-year VCE programs, students are offered different innovative curriculum pathways rich in Science and Mathematics. All programs include English Studies, Mathematical Methods, Chemistry and Extended Investigation. The remainder of a students’ program would comprise a combination of the subjects listed below.

Alterations to the EBS Programs
Variations to our programs are often not available and should be carefully considered before applying. Any changes must be approved with the EBS Program Coordinator and/or Assistant Principal.
For more information about our EBS programs, families are invited to attend our annual online information evening, details of which can be found on the Applications page.

Our EBS Programs
Designed as two-year VCE programs, students are required to attempt 12 units in the first year (Year 11 program) and 10 units in the second year (Year 12 program) of their VCE studies.

Year 11 Programs
Our Year 11 programs set the foundation for a future in STEM with subjects and curriculum designed to create critical and reflective learners. The ability to set personal goals, develop healthy and sustainable routines, and prepare for examinations are essential skills that are addressed throughout the year.

Extended Investigation
Extended Investigation is a core element of our Year 11 EBS programs and provides a unique opportunity for all Year 11 EBS students to work on a research project during the year. Students work in a discipline of their interest, gaining valuable technical and analytical skills, as well as insight into the scientific process.
During Unit 3 & 4 Extended Investigation, all students develop their analytical skills and abilities to critically engage with expert knowledge. Skills gained in our Year 11 foundation year help pave the pathway to success in all Year 12 subjects and higher education courses. All research undertaken by students through our Extended Investigation subject is presented in a scientific symposium at the end of the year.

Year 12 Programs
Our Year 12 programs enable students to use the skills developed in Year 11 to focus on their desired STEM pathway. Studying university extension subjects alongside Year 12 subjects is available for high-achieving and passionate students.

Support in EBS
We understand and can appreciate the nervousness and anticipation of students starting at a new school, particularly those transferring at VCE levels.
The relationship between staff and students at Elizabeth Blackburn Sciences and University High School is based on a genuine partnership. Together, we work to ensure that students have appropriate support mechanisms in place to enable them to achieve their full potential. We have a highly experienced, and broad Student Engagement and Wellbeing Team that continually supports the transition of all new students into the school.

Orientation Program
The Elizabeth Blackburn Sciences orientation program occurs in December prior to the school year and has been designed to build academic and social foundations for each student. It is important for all students enrolled in Elizabeth Blackburn Sciences for the following year to attend.

Our orientation program provides opportunities for students to meet EBS staff and students, make new friends, learn how to access resources and set the stage for a smooth start to the year. Students engage in activities from all subjects and are introduced to the laboratory and safety procedures with a scientific experiment. Information sessions and social events also provide an insight into school operations, support services and the extracurricular activities available.
