Homework clubs and tutor program
What is the Tutor Learning Initiative?
The Tutor Learning Initiative is a special program running at University High School, funded by the Victorian Government, and designed to support students whose learning has been significantly disrupted as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Initiative commenced in 2021 and has been funded through to the end of 2022.
The Tutor Learning Initiative enables schools across Victoria to engage qualified teachers as tutors to work with small groups of students and support their learning.
The Initiative is consistent with Australian and international evidence, which shows that small group tutoring is one of the most effective educational interventions available to support students to progress in their learning.
Progress is monitored as part of the program and feedback sought to continue to improve the program.
The education and wellbeing of every student is our priority. In addition to the tutor support provided through the Initiative, all our teachers and support staff are working hard to provide a teaching and learning program that targets the needs of every child in the school.
Tutoring Logistics
At University High School, the tutoring is targeted at all year levels, from 7-12.
Tutoring is mainly taking place in Maths, English and EAL classrooms.
Tutors generally support selected students in the classroom two to three sessions a week for a minimum of a term each year. For senior students, tutors may offer additional recess, lunchtime and after-school study sessions.
Tutors work collaboratively and alongside classroom teachers to minimise disruptions, ensure the program complements the regular curriculum and supports the lessons taking place in the classroom.
Selection for the Program
Students are selected based on classroom teacher, coordinator and tutor observations, as well as progress report, NAPLAN and PAT assessment results and data.
Students are not required to engage with the program and may opt out at any time.
Our Tutors
This year, we have seven tutors employed, including graduate, experienced as well as returning and current teachers at University High School, with varying loads and differing areas of expertise.
Great care is taken to match tutors with students to ensure the best possible working relationships and opportunities for student growth and success.
